Breaking youth stereotypes and confronting institutionalized and social oppression, GRADUATION is an examination of youth violence in Chicago. Photographing schools attended by victims of violence beginning in 2006, with the death of 14-year-old honor roll student Starkeisa Reed to present, these images will be presented in a grid of more than 100 schools. Accompanying the piece is audio commentary from youth creating a platform for their stories, opinions and voices to be heard. The youth interviewed discuss education, youth programs, school closings, their goals and accomplishments, poverty and more, as they break down flaws within society that contribute to the violence so many youth are affected by. Confronting current conditions Graduation sheds light on what happens when youth, education and urban development is put second, as well as showing the positive changes that come forth when youth are given opportunities to excel.
